6x04 The Substitute: Recap

2004

Locke gets home from the airport, falls down.  Helen helps him up, they’re engaged.  Randy fires Locke for lying about going on the walkabout instead of the conference (they didn’t let him on the walkabout).  There is a yellow hummer parked too close to Locke’s van so he can’t get in.  The van belongs to Hugo, who thinks Randy is a douche.  Hugo owns the company now, offers to get Locke a temp job.  Locke meets Rose.  She is dying.  She finds him a job substitute teaching at the school where Ben Linus teaches European History.  Locke tells Helen how he lied about the trip.  Locke doesn’t want to call Jack to get his spine fixed because he doesn’t believe in miracles.  Helen does.  They tear up Jack’s card and get all googly-eyed over one another. 

2007

Flocke finds out Richard doesn’t know about the “candidates”, feels bad for punching him the throat, tries to recruit him, Richard says no.  Flocke sees Little Boy Blond standing in a clearing with bloody hands, seems scared, Richard can’t see him.  Flocke goes after Sawyer, who wants the answers Flocke promises and goes with him.  Little Boy Blonde shows up again, Sawyer can see him too.  Flocke chases him, Boy says “You know the rules, you can’t kill him.”  Flocke yells “Don’t tell me what I can’t do.” like Locke.  Seems to be having a bit of an identity crisis.  Scared Richard tries to get Sawyer back, can’t.  Sawyer thinks about shooting Flocke, doesn’t.  Flocke and Sawyer go to a cave on the side of the island where there is a scale holding a white and black stone on equal levels.  Flocke throws the white stone in the water.  “Inside joke.”  Ha.  Names are on the cave walls with numbers attached.  4-Locke, 8-Reyes, 15-Ford, 16-Jarrah, 23-Shepard, and 42-Kwon.  Flocke crosses off 4-Locke.  Many other names are crossed out.  They are candidates to inheret the position of protector of the island from Jacob.  Flocke says Jacob brought them there by manipulating their lives, and there is nothing to protect the island from, so Sawyer leaves with him to find a way home.

At the Foot

Ben tells Ilana Flocke killed everyone, including Jacob.  Ilana takes Jacob’s ashes in a bag, says Flocke is stuck as Locke now.  Ilana wants to lead everyone to the temple but Sun demands Locke be buried with the other Losties.  After they bury Locke, Ben apologizes in his eulogy for killing him.
