6x01-6x02 LA X Parts 1&2: Recap
On last night’s Lost:
2004:
We’re back on Oceanic Flight 815, Rose and Jack are sitting in the seats we saw them in back in season 1. In contrast to the previous timeline, Rose is now comforting an anxious Jack through the turbulence. Jack receives one, not two, bottles of alcohol from the stewardess, and spills most of it when he goes to pour it into his glass due to turbulence. When the shaking stops Rose says, “You can let go now”. After Bernard returns to sit with Rose, Jack goes to the restroom and discovers a bleeding cut on his neck when looking in the mirror. Returning to his seat, he encounters Desmond, now sitting in the same row as Jack. Jack seems to recognize Desmond and asks if they’ve met, but Desmond does not remember and introduces himself. The stewardess calls for a doctor and Jack is brought to the restroom where Charlie has a bag of heroine lodged in his throat in the restroom. Sayid shows up to kick down the door so Jack can get him out. Jack asks for a pen to do a tracheotomy but digs out the bag of heroine. When Jack returns to his seat Desmond is gone. When Sayid sits down he eyes his picture of Nadia.
Kate is still sitting with the marshall, cuffed as per the previous timeline. She stumbles on Jack when she exits the restroom and they exchange pleasantries while she steals a pen from him.
Sawyer and Hurley are sitting across the aisle from one another. Sawyer tells Hurley he shouldn’t be so public about winning the lottery, someone might take advantage. Hurley says nothing bad can happen to him, he’s the luckiest man in the world.
Sun is staring at Rose and Bernard, and comments on how happy they are together. Jin tells her to button up her shirt. He is eyeing the watch that, in the first timeline at least, he’s transporting to L.A. for her father, as his final assignment.
Boone and Locke are sitting on opposite sides of one row, with Frogurt sleeping with an eye mask on between them. Boone explains he went to Australia to bring his sister back from a bad relationship, but she wouldn’t come. Locke explains he had gone on a walkabout. Boone says he would stick by Locke if they were ever stranded in the wilderness.
Beneath the plane, the island lies submerged at the bottom of the ocean.
When the plane lands, Kate is escorted off by the marshall. In the terminal, she asks to go to the restroom. He takes her in, and she attempts to use a pen to unlock the cuffs but is unsuccessful. She attacks the marshall, giving him a head injury that knocks him out, and escapes into the crowded terminal. She finds herself in an elevator with Sawyer, and he sees the cuffs hidden under the jacket she took from the marshall. Sawyer holds the elevator door so that Kate can exit before the two security guards before they can realize who she is. Kate tries to cut the taxi line but Frogurt makes her go to the end behind Hurley on his cell phone. Spotted by the marshall, Kate hurries into the next available cab, and finds herself sitting next to Claire.
Charlie is escorted off the plane with his wrists bound. On the way out he tells Jack he shouldn’t have done anything, “I was supposed to die.”
Alone on the plane together, Jack and Locke exchange a glance. In the terminal, Jack is called to the courtesy desk where they inform him they have lost his father’s coffin and can only say it is “in transit”. Jack has to explain to his mother why he scheduled the funeral for that day. Locke joins Jack in the lost baggage area because they have also lost his bag of knives. Locke tells Jack that Oceanic “couldn’t possibly” know where his father is, because he was only transporting the body, not the spirit. Jack asks what happened to Locke (because he is back in his wheelchair) and Locke tells Jack his condition is “irreversible”. Jack still notes he is a spinal surgeon and offers to help, giving Locke his card before he leaves.
Sun and Jin get held up at customs, where a customs agent is asking Jin what sort of business he is in. Jin has a note explaining the watch is part of a business transaction but not what business he is in. When the customs agent finds piles of hidden money in the suitcase, he brings Jin in back for more questioning. Another customs agent asks Sun if she can speak any English, as it would be helpful, but Sun replies “No English”. We are not explicitly told if Sun has learned English in this timeline.
2007:
In the Jungle
Kate, Miles, Jack, Hurley, Sayid, Jin, Sawyer and Juliet had been in 1977 at the site of the Dharma station Swan as it was being built when the drill they were using hit a pocket of energy and created a strong magnetic pull. Jack dropped the atom bomb in hoping it would detonate on impact, it did not. Juliet was pulled in after it and struck it with a rock until it exploded.
Kate awakens, it is night and there is a large crater in the ground. She recognizes this to be the crater formed when Desmond blew up the hatch, and not a result of the atom bomb they hoped would reset the timeline. They have been transported through time to 2007. Kate sees Sawyer and Jack lying unmoving on the ground, and chooses to run to Jack. Both Jack and Sawyer are okay. They realizes Juliet is still alive and calling out from the pit. The group works to remove the debris and Sawyer reaches the bottom to have a few heartfelt moments with Juliet. Soon though, she appears to become confused, suggesting they meet for coffee sometime. Sawyer has to remind Juliet of who he is. She says she has to tell him something very important but dies before telling him what it is. Sawyer returns to the surface with Juliet’s body, glaring at Jack, who he vowed to kill should Juliet die. (As Jack was the one who convinced them all that blowing up the bomb would reset the timeline)
At the van, Jacob has appeared to Hurley. He introduces himself, says he can’t do anything for Sayid (who is dying of a gunshot wound to the gut) and no one else can see him because he was killed an hour ago. Jacob instructs Hurley to ask Jin to take him to the hole in the tree where he was with the french woman, which is a back door to the temple. That will be the only way to save Sayid. When Jack admits there is nothing more he can do for Sayid, Hurley takes charge and along with Jin, Kate, & Jack, takes Sayid to the temple.
Sawyer wishes to stay behind to bury Juliet. Kate wants to stay as well but Sawyer asks her not to and instead asks Miles. Once Juliet is buried, a distraut Sawyer forcefully asks Miles to find out what very important thing Juliet was going to tell him before she died. Juliet was going to tell Sawyer “It worked.”
The temple group is captured shortly after they enter the hole in the tree. They are taken to the temple, where a Japanese man (Dogan) and his translator (Lennon) come out to meet them. Dogan appears to be the head of the temple, and gives instructions to kill the group, but Hurley stops him, tells him Jacob sent him, and emplores him to open the guitar case. Inside the case was a wooden Ankh (Egyptian symbol of eternal life) which Dogan breaks over his knee. He pulls out a paper containing (at least) the names of Kate, Jack, Hurley, Sayid, and Jin. This prompts Dogan and Lennon to note they must help Sayid or they will all be in trouble.
Inside the temple, Dogan and Lennon seem surprised that the water is red and not clear. They note to Jack (who has taken responsibility for Sayid’s condition) the “risks” involved, and Jack tells them to do what they need to do. Sayid is carried into the water by four men, and his head is held underwater while Dogan watches the sands in an hourglass count down. By the time the hourglass is drained Sayid’s body has gone limp. Jack tries CPR to no avail.
Miles and Sawyer are brought to the temple after being captured in the jungle. Sawyer is unconcious. Miles, sitting next to Sayid’s body, seems confused. Hurley speaks with Dogan in another room, where it is revealed Dogan can speak and understand and English. Hurley reveals Jacob is dead, which alarms Dogan. The others sound the alarms and prepare the temple, running a trail of black ash around the outside and lighting off a red firework, which Richard sees from the beach. Sayid wakes up.
At the Beach
Fake Locke cleans the knife Ben used to kill Jacob. Ben is staring at the fire, looking confused and terrfied. He questions why Jacob wouldn’t fight back. Locke instructs Ben to go outside and get Richard. Outside, Richard has been shown Locke’s body by Ilana and her group. Richard shows the body to Ben. Bram’s team bring Ben back into the statue, without Richard. Fake Locke calls them Jacob’s “bodyguards” and tells them to go home because Jacob is no longer here. They begin to fire and Fake Locke/Smokey/Man in Black kills them all.
MIB as Locke leaves Ben alive, and tells him how confused Locke was when Ben was killing him. He notes how Locke was the only one who saw the island for what it was, and wanted to stay, which is ironic, because all the Man in Black wants to do is leave the island. As they return outside, Richard sees the red firework, and the Man in Black greets him and notes he looks good without chains. Then the Man in Black knocks him out and throws him over his shoulder, telling the others he is disappointed in them.
